A Guide from Birth Professionals

Packing your hospital bag is an essential step as you prepare for the arrival of your little one. As a birth doula and labor nurse for over ten years, here's what you need to make your hospital stay more comfortable and less stressful.

Here’s a list of items you should consider packing for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.

For Labor

  1. Wooden Comb for Labor Coping - A wooden comb can be an effective tool for managing labor pain. Gripping it in your hand can create a distraction from contractions and provide a grounding sensation.
  2. Humidifier Diffuser - Hospital rooms can be dry, especially if you’re there for several days. A humidifier diffuser helps keep the air moist. This prevents your mucous membranes from drying out, making your stay more comfortable. Plus, it can double as an aromatherapy diffuser.
  3. Lavender Essential Oil - Lavender essential oil can create a calming environment during labor. A few drops in your diffuser can help you relax and stay centered.
  4. Snacks and Honey Sticks - Labor can be a long process, and having your favorite snacks on hand can keep your energy levels up. Honey sticks are a great option for a quick boost of energy.
  5. Portable Fan - A small, portable fan can help you stay cool during labor, especially if you tend to get hot when anxious or in pain.
  6. Lila Birth and Postpartum Gown - This labor gown, designed by a nurse, is both stylish and functional, offering more coverage than standard hospital gowns.

For Baby

  1. Going Home Outfit - Bring a special outfit for your baby’s first trip home. The Finley romper is an excellent choice. It matches the Lila birth gown and is free of snaps or zippers, making dressing your newborn straightforward and easy.
  2. Baby Swaddle - Give your baby a sense of security while sleeping with your own baby swaddle. Consider the Swaddelini instead of the scratchy hospital blanket.

For Postpartum

  1. Frida Instant Ice Maxi Pads - These pads provide cooling relief and help reduce swelling after delivery.
  2. C-Section Recovery Band - If you’re having a planned c-section, a recovery band can offer support and comfort during your recovery.
  3. Nipple Butter - Breastfeeding can sometimes lead to raw and chapped nipples. While hospitals provide some supplies, if you prefer organic products, Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter is for you.
  4. Herbal Perineal Spray - The hospital will likely provide numbing spray and witch hazel pads. However, if you want additional herbal relief, Earth Mama Herbal Perineal Spray is highly recommended.
  5. Abdominal Support Binder - Abdominal support binders can help with postpartum pain and recovery. The Frida Postpartum Support Binder is a great choice.

Additional Essentials

  1. Personal Toiletries - Don’t forget your toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and any other personal care items you use daily.
  2. Comfortable Clothes- Pack loose, comfortable clothing for your stay and for going home. Nursing bras and tops can be particularly helpful if you plan to breastfeed.
  3. Important Documents - Make sure to bring your ID, insurance information, and any hospital paperwork you’ve filled out in advance.
  4. Phone and Charger - Stay connected and capture those first moments with your newborn.

Preparing for your hospital stay by packing thoughtfully can help reduce stress and make your labor and delivery experience more comfortable.

Remember, while hospitals provide many essentials, bringing your preferred items can make a significant difference in your comfort and overall experience. Good luck, and best wishes for a smooth and joyful birth experience!
